Presentation Description / Summary: Rhinos are routinely dehorned in an attempt to help mitigate high poaching pressures. An essential part of this process, is the safe immobilisation of this species. To minimise the anaesthetic risk in white rhinoceros, cardiac rhythm monitoring in the field is desired. The rhino ECG project aims to describe the cardiac rhythm in white rhinos under field conditions. ECGs are obtained from orphan rhinoceros that have been hand-raised and are therefore approachable without any sedative and anesthetic drugs, and from adult anaesthetized white rhinoceros in the greater Kruger National Park area during routine dehorning operations.
Learner Outcomes: TBD
Learning Objectives:
understand important aspects of rhino conservation
demonstrate sound knowledge about dehorning as a anti-poaching strategy
identify challenges of rhino immobilization and the benefit of cardiac rhythm monitoring during immobilization
