Presentation Description / Summary: Access to the vasculature is required for nearly all minimally-invasive approaches to the heart, arteries, or veins. However, there are no consensus guidelines in veterinary medicine addressing how this basic technique should be accomplished. Anecdotally, there are wide differences amongst programs in how vascular access and closure is achieved in animals. Using video from specific cases, this session will highlight basic principles of arterial and venous access, demonstrate unique or complex approaches to catheterization, and highlight lessons learned from 20 years of experience performing cardiac catheterization.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, the audience member will appreciate a stepwise approach to jugular and femoral venous access.
Upon completion, the audience member will appreciate a stepwise approach to femoral and carotid arterial access.
Upon completion, the audience member will learn new ways to maintain hemostasis after vascular access.
