Dr. Backus is a graduate of the University of California-Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned MS and PhD degrees in Physiology at the University in 1987 and 1991, respectively. In 2004, he was boarded by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and began directing the Nestlé Purina Endowed Program in Small Animal Nutrition at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He current supervises a clinical nutrition support service, trains clinical nutrition residents and veterinary students, leads a research program with a primary focus on vitamin D nutrition in dogs and cats.
