Presentation Description / Summary:
Objectives: Determine short- and long-term (> 2 years) outcomes associated with vesicopreputial anastomosis (VPA) in goats with obstructive urolithiasis. Materials and
Methods: Medical records were reviewed to identify cases of obstructive urolithiasis (OU) in goats that underwent VPA. Seven cases were identified in an 11 year period (2008-2019). Short and long term complications, and ultimate outcomes were obtained through clinical exams (4) and contacting the owner by telephone (3).
Results: All were male goats that ranged in age from 3 months to 1 year at the time of VPA. Body weight at the time of surgery ranged from 7.3-69 kg. Four patients had previous surgical treatments for OU that were unsuccessful. In 3 cases, VPA was the first urinary diversion procedure performed. In the short term, VPA provided successful urinary diversion in all goats. Complications noted postoperatively included incontinence (6), urine scalding (3), recurrent ulcerative posthitis (3), partial incisional dehiscence (1) and incisional hernia (1). Additional urinary diversion surgeries were not required in any goat. Of 5 goats with long term follow up of at least 24 months, mean survival time is 93 months (range 67-119 months) with 3/5 still alive at 67, 87 and 113 months following VPA.
Conclusions: All seven goats undergoing VPA had successful urinary diversion and good longevity and overall quality of life following the procedure. Complications associated with the procedure were considered minor or acceptable by the owners.
Learner Outcomes: 1. Understand the indications for vesicopreputial anastomosis for relief of complicated obstructive urolithiasis cases in ruminants. 2. Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of this technique relative to other means of case management. 3. Consider the relatively simple surgical approach applicable to practicing veterinarians.
