Presentation Description / Summary: French bulldogs have soared in popularity over the past decade. As with any exponential burst in breed demand, this rapid change has contributed to breed-associated morbidity and mortality in the French bulldog. However, unlike with other previous crowd favorites, the breadth and severity of conditions in the French bulldog encompasses nearly every body system. Within the field of veterinary neurology, we are caring for dramatically more French bulldogs afflicted by a variety of conditions. In many cases, the presentation of these diseases is markedly more severe in the French bulldog than in other breeds. In this panel, we will discuss the various neurological diseases seen in higher frequency in the French bulldog. The purpose of this session is to engage practitioners, researchers, and educators in a debate regarding our responsibility as care providers in the ethical discussions surrounding this breed.

Learner Outcomes: 1. Gain understanding in the neurologic diseases observed in French bulldogs and the differences in disease presentation compared to other breeds 2. Consider what obligations, if any, practitioners have regarding discussions with various stakeholders in the discussion of breed standards, ethical breeding strategies, and information distribution relative to the increasing health care crisis of the French bulldog

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to consider what neurologic conditions affect French bulldogs and whether such conditions are more severe in French bulldogs than other breeds.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to consider their own standpoint on the French bulldog health crisis.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to engage in conversations regarding how to reduce breed associated morbidity and mortality in French bulldogs.
