Presentation Description / Summary: Complications are going to occur with the routine practice of neurosurgery. These cases can present unique challenges to the clinician. Identification of the problem is the first step to correcting undesirable developments in a case. Understanding the possible complications that may occur with various procedures, when these events may occur, and finally how to correct some of these problems is important for the surgeon. This lecture will discuss potential complications in the early, intermediate and long term period following surgery. Examples of complications presented include errors related to surgical decision making, implant failure and infection. Examples of resolution to surgical complications as well as the clinical reasoning and relevant literature will be discussed.
Learner Outcomes: 1. The attendee will be able to identify various complications that may arise following neurosurgery and the expected period when the problem may develop. 2. The audience will formulate a plan for identification of possible complications. 3. The attendee will be able to identify possible resolutions for complications presented.
