Presentation Description / Summary: While it is the purview of veterinarians to make diagnoses, technicians must also be able to analyze the results of all manner of diagnostic tests to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care possible. Because acid-base status is often measured at the cage-side, technicians are sometimes the first veterinary personnel to see the results and are charged with pointing out abnormalities to the veterinarian. Rapid and accurate analysis of these results is key to making sure that patients get the correct treatment quickly. In this presentation attendees will learn a simple approach to analyzing acid-base that will lead to fast identification of acid-base disorders, as well as discussing basic treatment of acid-base derangements.
Learner Outcomes: The attendees will: 1. Learn to apply a simple method for analyzing acid-base status based on venous samples 2. Practice analyzing several blood sample examples for acid-base derangements
