Presentation Description / Summary: In this case-based discussion, we will review the indications and the set up needed for endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation in patients with medically refractory congestive heart failure. We will review how to recognize respiratory muscle fatigue, the optimal timing for intervening and case selection. We will also discuss the benefits and risks associated with ventilatory as well as a review of the veterinary literature relating to short and long term prognosis in congestive heart failure patients managed with ventilation therapy.
Learning Objectives:
1. To know the indications, optimal timing and case selection for endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation in dogs and cats with medically refractory congestive heart failure
2. To know the risks and benefits associated with positive pressure ventilatory therapy for management of severe congestive heart failure
3. To understand how one decides to wean a patient from the ventilator and the expected short and long term outcomes.
