Presentation Description / Summary: Protein-losing enteropathy is a syndrome characterized by excessive loss of plasma proteins into the gastrointestinal tract. Frequently, protein loss reflects conditions in the small intestine that interfere with digestion and/or absorption of nutrients. These conditions may include increased mucosal permeability, lymphatic obstruction or rupture, and mucosal ulceration or erosion. Dogs with PLE often have a severe negative protein and energy balance that makes nutritional support essential. This presentation will review nutritional management of PLE as a major component of a multimodal approach to the therapeutic management of dogs with protein-losing enteropathy.
Learner Outcomes: 1. Understand the main mechanisms behind protein loss and how these conditions interfere with digestion and/or absorption of nutrients. 2. Identify nutrients and their role in managing PLE. 3. Describe nutritional support approaches aimed at ensuring proper nutritional management of PLE. 4. Communicate the disease condition and management of PLE to owners to aid in understanding and compliance with the recommendation
