Presentation Description / Summary: Nutrition plays an important role in the management of diabetic cats. Traditional treatment regimens of nutrition and insulin are starting to alter with oral therapy being introduced. With changes in how these animals are monitored from blood glucose to beta-hydroxybutyrates (BHB) this will effect how these animals should be fed. Recommendations of obtaining a ideal body condition score is still vital, alongside optimum nutrition and feeding a fixed formula diet is vital. Discussion of the role of fats, carbohydrates and proteins and their role when using orally administered SGLT2 inhibitors.
Learner Outcomes: 1. Understand how different diabetes medications (insulin and SGLT2 inhibitors) are monitored. 2. Understand how nutrition effects blood glucose and BHB blood levels. 3. Develop an understanding of how obesity and insulin resistance can be helped/managed with nutrition.
