Presentation Description / Summary: Diseases resulting in ineffective hematopoiesis are relatively common in veterinary patients. However, despite their prevalence, these diseases tend to go undiagnosed in the general practice setting, often confused with more familiar diseases like immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. Misdiagnosis may lead to perceptions of treatment failure when the observed disease does not respond within a predicted time frame. Consequently, accurate diagnosis and realistic expectations about treatment are vital to a positive outcome.
In this session, we will review some of the diseases most commonly associated with ineffective erythropoiesis, with an emphasis on precursor targeted immune-mediated anemia. Treatment considerations related to immunosuppression, blood transfusion, thromboprophylaxis, and splenectomy will be addressed. At the end of this interactive case-based session, participants will be able to interpret clinical and laboratory findings, develop problem lists, differential diagnoses, and diagnostic plans, and formulate appropriate management strategies for patients with diseases resulting in ineffective erythropoiesis.
Learner Outcomes: TBD
Learning Objectives:
Select appropriate medical therapies for patients with precursor targeted immune mediated anemia and other forms of ineffective hematopoiesis
Describe the mechanisms of action, risks, and benefits of splenectomy in patients with immune-mediated hematologic disease
Implement thromboprophylactic strategies for patients with immune-mediated hematologic diseases
