Presentation Description / Summary: Cardiac cachexia, the muscle loss associated with heart failure, is common in dogs and cats and has important clinical implications on optimal nutrition and overall health of the patient. Recent research on cardiac cachexia in dogs and cats is helping to better understand the mechanisms, diagnose it earlier, and identify potential medical and nutritional treatments.
Learning Objectives:
Define cardiac cachexia, its prevalence, and its impact on morbidity and mortality in dogs and cats with heart disease.
List methods for diagnosing cardiac cachexia.
List the primary metabolic alterations in cardiac cachexia and nutritional factors important to help address them.
