Presentation Description / Summary: Communication from the brain to other parts of the body has been a well-known function, though more recently, research has proven how the GI tract reciprocates communication with the neurological system. This is an intricate system, with imbalances in the GI tract possibly being associated with a disease state. Research is additionally showing how creating a healthy balance in the microbiome can reverse symptoms associated with some conditions. This session will review some of the functions of the gut-brain axis with a focus on how pain and pain management are a function of the gut-brain axis in pets.
Learning Objectives:
The attendee will be able to define the gut-brain axis and its relationship with pain.
The attendee will be able to explain the gut-endocannabinoid axis and its role in pain.
The attendee will understand the role of inflammation in the gut, and inflammation and joint pain.
