Frailty is a state of diminished health and function associated with aging. It is also a quantifiable clinical metric that can predict important outcomes, including fucntional status and mortality. Clinical metrology instruments (CMI), such as the Frailty Phenotype and Frailty Index, are routinely used in human geriatrics to guide manageemnt of clinical patients. These instruments can also help assess the response to clinical interventions in clinical trials. This session reviews the rapidly growing literature on frailty in dogs and introduces the use of CMIs for frailty as tools in research and clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
...understand the concept of frailty as a quantitative clinical metric that integrates multiple elements of the aging process and predicts health outcomes in humans and dogs.
understand the Frailty Phenotype and Frailty Index clinical metrology tools used in humans and dogs and their applications in clinical geriatrics, gerontology research, and development of therapeutic interventions
appraise the strengths and limitations of current frailty assessment tools and how these might be used in clinical practice and research.
