Updated ACVIM Consensus Statement on Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Enteropathies in Dogs

Chronic gastrointestinal signs are a common reason for dogs to be presented in referral settings, with up to 20–30% of veterinary visits in companion animals related to vomiting or diarrhea. Diagnostic and treatment strategies for chronic enteropathies (CE) in dogs have received great attention in basic and clinical research over the last decade. The 2010 ACVIM Consensus Statement was an important milestone in achieving a more standardized approach to companion animals suspected of a CE diagnosis. Important advances have been made in classifying, diagnosing, and treating CE in dogs, which we strongly feel warrant an update of the Consensus Statement published 14 years ago.
A novel classification scheme and approach to ACVIM-endorsed statements (AES) has been recently introduced. This session gives an update on the current efforts to revise the 2010 Consensus Statement using a newly developed protocol that involves an intensive review of the relevant veterinary literature (diagnosis section) and a systematic review (treatment section) followed by consensus building (Delphi method).

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the new ACVIM-endorsed statements process and describe the role of a methodologist in this process.
  • Explain the definition of consensus and sources of bias and describe methods to reach an unbiased consensus.
  • Define differences between intensive literature review, systematic review, and meta-analysis, describe methods to document such reviews and meta-analyses, and explain what a reference standard and test of treatment entails.
