In this session we will discuss the current standing of microRNA (miRNA) investigation in canine medicine. We will review the characteristics that make miRNAs promising as diagnostic and prognostic tools and discuss some of the complicating factors when utilizing miRNAs for both diagnosis and treatment. We will delve into the literature and critically evaluate miRNA expression studies in different disease processes, looking at specific miRNA expression reported in specific diseases. Finally, we will end by looking into the future on what is being done and what needs to be done next as we move to the next steps in this exciting potential testing and treatment modality.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the characteristics of microRNAs (miRNAs)
Discuss the features that make miRNAs promising diagnostic and prognostic tools and recognize the potential limitations of using miRNAs as diagnostic or prognostic tools as well as the limitations of using miRNAs as a treatment modality in veterinary medicine
Critically evaluate literature relating to miRNA use in veterinary medicine
