Presentation Description / Summary: Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) and Erythropoietin play pivotal roles in both the response to hypoxia and the regulation of red blood cell mass. This presentation will review the physiology of this intricate system of regulation. Therapeutics that target this regulatory system will also be discussed.
Learner Outcomes: After this session, the participant will appreciate: • The importance of erythropoietin in the maintenance of RBC production • The interplay between hypoxia, HIF and erythropoietin in the regulation of anemia • The importance of hypoxia in the progression of kidney disease
