This lecture will review approaches to prevent extensively antibiotic resistant infections in tertiary care settings. The primary risk factors for developing an antibiotic resistant nosocomial infection are duration of hospitalization, use of antibiotics, and use of medical devices such as urinary or intravenous catheters. Topics covered include antibiotic stewardship strategies, hospital biosecurity/infection control, and clinical management strategies to prevent nosocomial infections. For each broad topic, practical solutions that can be implemented in tertiary care and most other practice settings will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Incorporate new antibiotic stewardship practices into their clinical decision making
Understand hospital biosecurity and be able to evaluate their own hospital biosecurity/infection control practices
Implement new and practical biosecuirty/infection control practices into their clinic policies and medical managment of patients
