Cytologic samples obtained by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration are routinely obtained by veterinarians to characterize hepatobiliary disease. Although this methodology delivers an unequivocal diagnosis in a subset of diseases, a gray zone exists. This session will clarify the diagnostic utility of hepatic cytology through critical review of the literature, recent research investigations, and the experiences of a clinical pathologist and an internist, each with expertise in hepatobiliary disease.

Learning Objectives:

  • State the indications and limitations of hepatic cytology.
  • Describe the approach to hepatic cytology.
  • Identify common infectious and neoplastic lesions in hepatic aspirate smears.
