Presentation Description / Summary: Nutritional management of feline diabetes centers around two primary goals: minimizing the occurrence of hyper- and hypoglycemia and maintaining a healthy body weight. Several strategies can be employed to minimize blood glucose fluctuations and post-prandial hyperglycemia: lower overall carbohydrate intake, slow glucose absorption using dietary fiber, and promote steady glucose absorption through small, frequent meals. This lecture will review principals to glycemic index, glycemic load, and fiber properties related to diabetes. It will also provide practical tips for developing the best diabetic diet plan based on available products and patient-specific needs using case examples.
