Presentation Description / Summary: Although there are diets marketed for pets with cardiac disease, there is not a single diet that is appropriate for all dogs and cats with cardiac disease. Instead, it is important to view pets as individuals to select the optimal diet for each one. In addition to the need to individualize the diet, many pets with cardiac disease have concurrent diseases, which makes selection of an optimal diet even more challenging. More than 50% of dogs and cats with cardiac disease have concurrent diseases, which complicates the process of diet selection. This talk will focus on how to select diets for patients with cardiac disease with co-morbidities to optimize their overall care.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the process of identifying nutrients of concern for an individual patient with cardiac disease.
Describe how to select between multiple options for diets in an individual patient with cardiac disease.
Describe how to select between multiple options for diets in an individual patient that has cardiac disease PLUS one or more comorbidities.
