Presentation Description / Summary: Because there are only a limited number of veterinary “liver diets” on the market, they are often formulated for two or more disorders. Not all types of canine and feline hepatic disease require a therapeutic diet, but for certain cases nutritional management can be lifesaving. In this presentation, disorders such as chronic hepatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, and copper-associated hepatopathy will be reviewed and specific updated nutritional suggestions will be provided. Participants will be able to identify key nutrients and diet characteristics that help with the overall management plan.
Learner Outcomes: TBD
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize important factors in the clinical nutrition approach to common liver diseases. They will be able to adjust diet plans based on increasing/decreasing/changing various nutrient levels and ingredients. When encountering cases of hepatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, and other conditions they will be able to select appropriate diets and formulate nutrition plans for better case management.
