Presentation Description / Summary: Veterinarians routinely perform screening tests on their patients. Numerous reasons exist for such tests. Rarely are the tests justified from a biological perspective. This talk will present the philosophical basis for screening tests, how they translate to individual patient care, and how they can be misused and abused by failing to understand their purpose. Examples will be presented to illustrate the application of screening tests in veterinary medicine.
Learner Outcomes: Understanding the function of screening tests, how to apply them to the clinician's own clientele, and recognition that best medicine does not always equal best practice.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the uses and misuses of screening tests
apply knowledge to determining the likelihood of disease presence or absence with imperfect tests
understand the effect of disease prevalence on screening test performance
