Presentation Description / Summary: African Horse Sickness is is an infectious disease affecting equids and infection causes high mortality rates in naive populations. In Southern Africa, the virus has important implications on animal welfare, the equine industry and the local economy of rural communities which depends on working equids. Recently, an outbreak occurred in Thailand and Malaysia, resulting in the death of hundreds of horses. During this session the history, etiology, (suspected) pathophysiology, clinical signs and diagnosis as well as current treatment and prevention approaches for African Horse Sickness will be presented. This will include the highlights of recent research focused on improved understanding of the virus pathophysiology, which likely involves viral immune evasion strategies, and the search for improved vaccine strategies.
Learner Outcomes: 1. Detailed knowledge of the African Horse Sickness virus and the clinical signs of infection. 2. An improved understanding of the suspected pathophysiology of African Horse Sickness. 3. Preventative strategies for African Horse Sickness.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will be able to have an improved understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, clinical picture and presumed pathophysiology of African horse sickness.
Upon completion, participant will be able to describe proposed protection strategies against African horse sickness.
Upon completion, participant will be able to evaluate the risks of incursion of African horse sickness virs into non-endemic countries.
