With over 30 causes, the diagnostic workup of a patient with polyuria/polydipsia (PU/PD) can be overwhelming for both the clinician and the client. This session will simplify the process by explaining the mechanisms by which increased thirst and urination occur. Through a mechanistic approach, the attendee will learn how to approach a PU/PD patient by identifying key features of the patient's signalment, history, and clinicopathologic findings. A stepwise approach will be presented to help streamline the diagnostic workup. The session will be interactive through the use of cases and audience polling. Each disease process will be distilled down to the most common clinical manifestations and diagnostic test of choice such that the clinician can quickly arrive at an accurate diagnosis and institute treatment to resolve the problem and save the client's floors.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to list 6 criteria necessary for urine concentration in health and provide examples of how each of these criteria may be disrupted in disease
Learn how to prioritize a differential list for the patient with polyuria and polydipsia (PU/PD).
Recognize which mechanisms of PU/PD are associated with hyposthenuria and generate a refined list of differentials for the PU/PD patient presenting with hyposthenuria.
